Ohio Court Clerk Pocketed Cash
Sep. 08, 1998
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Confronted with surveillance videotapes showing him pocketing traffic fines, a former court clerk pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing $448,000 since 1985.
Jesse Oddi, 49, could get up to 71 years in prison at sentencing Nov. 16.
``There's not a reason that would ever be justification for what I did, so how could I give a reason?'' he said.
The former Franklin County clerk of courts agreed to repay all of the money.
The tapes were made over four days before Oddi's arrest in April.
Investigators said Oddi got a money bag each day with cash, receipts and an adding-machine tape containing a tally of fines collected. He took some of the cash, ran a new tally and voided receipts to cover the theft.
