JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ The Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union have agreed to a regional economic cooperation program.

Under the deal, the EU will contribute $6.12 million over five years to a program designed to promote cooperation on product standards, said the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat.

ASEAN includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar. The agency said the program should strengthen economic cooperation between the ASEAN nations and the European Union countries.

The program is intended to promote international trade by ensuring compatible standards. Training provided under the program will help develop a pool of ASEAN specialists on standards and conformity assessment, ASEAN officials said.
