DETROIT (AP) _ Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. said Tuesday that its new compact sport utility vehicle will be called the Santa Fe, the same name used for the concept version of the truck displayed on this year's auto show circuit.

The SUV is scheduled to go on sale in North America next spring as a 2001 model. It will compete with smaller, car-based sport utilities, such as Toyota's RAV4, Honda's CR-V and the Subaru Forester. Pricing has not been announced, but the Santa Fe is expected to list for under $20,000.

The Santa Fe, which debuted at this year's Detroit auto show, was designed primarily for the U.S. market at Hyundai's California design studio. It's expected to come with four- or six-cylinder engines and two- or all-wheel drive.
