SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met twice Tuesday with San Diego general manager Bobby Beathard about the vacant Chargers' coaching job.

``It went great,'' Beathard said in Mobile, Ala., where the two men are attending practices leading up to Saturday's Senior Bowl. ``I was very impressed with the guy. I felt very comfortable with him. He's obviously very organized and a very good coach who knows what he's doing.''

Fangio, 38, coordinated the blitzing schemes that helped carry the Panthers to the NFC championship game, where they were defeated by Green Bay.

Beathard also plans to meet with Jacksonville offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, but didn't know when that interview would occur.

Fangio and Gilbride, 45, are among the top candidates to replace Bobby Ross, who resigned on Jan. 3 because of differences with Beathard.

Beathard interviewed former New Orleans Saints coach Jim Mora on Monday, but Mora isn't believed to be a front-runner.
