Town Gets Town Crier
May. 04, 1991
MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) _ Redmond O'Colonies is so happy he could cry. After all, that's his job.
O'Colonies has just been named town crier for Martinez, by emergency proclamation no less.
''Martinez needs me,'' he says.
O'Colonies already had a purple velvet uniform, a three-cornered hat and silver-buckled shoes - almost everything he needed to enter the North American Town Crier competition.
But he needed an official title so Mayor Michael Menesini issued an emergency proclamation naming O'Colonies the Martinez town crier. The City Council hastily approved the unpaid post this week.
Town criers began as emissaries of kings and lords, keeping the public informed of new laws and taxes in days when most people could not read.
O'Colonies, a resident of this hamlet across the bay from San Francisco, works as a troubadour and comedian. He's footing the $800 for his uniform.
