CATAWISSA, Pa. (AP) _ A junior varsity basketball player who suffered from a pre-existing heart condition collapsed and died during a game.
Calvin Henderson, 16, a Southern Columbia High School sophomore, collapsed Wednesday night after coming off the floor near the end of the second quarter of the game against Millville and was rushed to Bloomsburg Hospital.
Dr. Michael Kenny, the Columbia County coroner, confirmed that Henderson died of arrhythmia, an irregular heart beat.
Kenny said the condition was pre-existing and it was unknown if physical activity was at least partially to blame. He said the irregular heartbeat could have occurred with or without the activity of the game.
The coroner added that arrhythmia is the most common cause of death for people with heart conditions.
Andy Hornberger, a senior guard for Southern, said Henderson was sitting on the bench after coming out of the game when he fell to the floor.
``He was on all fours and tried to get back up,'' Hornberger said. ``He fell back down and was all blue. They started yelling to him, because he didn't know where he was, and then they started CPR.''
Hornberger said Henderson was trying to talk but couldn't, and he was shaking as he lay on the court.
