Mar. 21, 1986
VIENNA, Austria (AP) _ Georgi Atanassov, a member of the Communist Party's policy-making Politburo, was elected Bulgaria's premier by Parliament today, the news agency BTA reported.
Atanasov replaced Grisha Filipov, who was elected Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, according to the BTA report monitored in Vienna. Atanassov previously held that post.
The government change came less than two weeks before the Bulgarian Communist Party Congress begins April 2.
A series of top-level changes have been linked to a new economic policy designed to loosen central planning. Party officials recently have criticized a lack of efficiency in economic management.
