ATLANTA (AP) _ The Atlanta Hawks placed guard Steve Smith on the injured list Friday because of a sprained left knee.

Smith injured the knee Thursday in a second-quarter collision with New Jersey Nets forward Keith Van Horn.

Smith will likely be out of action 7-10 days, Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said. However, the Hawks chose not to replace Smith on the roster, meaning he won't have to sit out the mandatory five games if he recovers early.

An MRI scan of Smith's knee Friday revealed no swelling, Triche said.
