BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont nonprofit says it is abandoning plans to open two additional sober house facilities in Bellows Falls.
Peter Mumma of Phoenix House said Thursday that the company had decided to refocus elsewhere, saying they don't have the money to engage in zoning battles. The Brattleboro Reformer reports Bellows Falls residents had filed appeals against opening the new mental health facilities.
Darren Lenois, who filed the first challenge to Phoenix House, says he is relieved by the announcement. He contends the opponents of the house are not heartless but "are concerned about our families, our neighborhoods."
Village President Deboarah Wright says she was pleased by the decision by Phoenix House to drop its plans.
