Kurds Protest Over Ocalan
Jun. 12, 1999
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) _ About 150 Kurds living in Cyprus demonstrated Saturday in support of Kurdish guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan, who is on trial in Turkey for treason.
The rally was held in Nicosia in the mainly Greek Cypriot south of Cyprus.
Cyprus, whose northern third has been occupied by Turkey since 1974, is traditionally sympathetic to the Kurdish cause.
Waving the red-and-yellow Kurdish flag and carrying portraits of Ocalan, the protesters called for the release of the guerrilla leader and delivered to U.N. officers a petition requesting the intervention of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to stop what they called the illegal trial.
