Feb. 24, 1988
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Poland, which showed great promise early in the Olympic hockey tournament, finished with its fourth straight loss, falling 3-2 Tuesday to Austria.
The first loss in that string was actually a 6-2 victory over France that was stripped away by the International Olympic Committee after star forward Jaroslaw Morawiecki tested positive for steroids. The France game followed two impressive Polish efforts: a 1-0 loss to Canada and a 1-1 tie with world champion Sweden.
The victory was Austria's first after four losses and a tie.
The three Austrian goals were scored in a 2:35 span of the second period by Edward Lebler, Gunter Koren and Gerhard Pusnik.
Austrian goalie Brian Stankiewicz made 30 saves, only allowing goals by Jan Stopczyk in the first period and Andrzej Kadziola in the second. He stopped all eight Polish shots in the third.
