TRENTON — The U.S. Department of Justice has started an investigation into reports of sexual abuse at a women's prison in New Jersey. The probe will focus on the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County. In the last two years, eight prison employees have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. Last week, a former senior officer at the prison was convicted of counts including sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and official misconduct. By David Porter. SENT: 100 words. NEW YORK — Residents in the Northeast cleaned up Wednesday, a day after powerful storms pounded the region with torrential rain and marble-sized hail, leaving at least three people dead and more than 200,000 homes and businesses without power. Connecticut officials said two people in New Fairfield and Danbury were killed Tuesday in separate accidents when trees fell on their trucks, including a woman whose 3-year-old child escaped injury. — ACQUITTED-SHOT TO DEATH — Police say a man who was acquitted of murder late last year was shot to death in Atlantic City earlier this week.

— CHILD PORN CHARGES — An elderly New Jersey man who had thousands of child sex abuse images and videos on his home computer has pleaded guilty to distributing child porn.
