KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Two Tennessee teachers have been given the Milken Educator Award, which carries a $25,000 cash prize.
Paula Franklin received the award in front of a gymnasium filled with students, peers and others at West High School in Knoxville on Thursday. In Millington, Katherine Watkins was surprised at Millington Central High School with the honor and became the first in that school system to receive it.
The teachers can use the cash prizes however they choose.
The Milken Family Foundation said in a news release that Watkins shares writings and photos from her travels with students about places mentioned in class reading assignments.
The release said Franklin serves breakfast to her students on the morning of their Advanced Placement government exam and handwrites a note of encouragement to each student.
