Irish Dismiss Third-String QB
Sep. 14, 1999
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Notre Dame third-string quarterback Eric Chappel has been dismissed from the team, Fighting Irish coach Bob Davie said Tuesday.
Chappel has played sparingly in his four years at Notre Dame.
``No question that it hurts us, no question that it hurts him. But it was a decision that I had to make,'' Davie said without giving any details of the dismissal.
Last year, Chappel started in place of the injured Jarious Jackson in the game against Southern California, but was replaced by Arnaz Battle after two of his three passes were intercepted.
Chappel's absence leaves the Irish thin at quarterback. Davie didn't sign any true quarterbacks in this year's recruiting class and converted freshman Gary Godsey from tight end to quarterback to have a fourth quarterback on the roster.
