ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ John Lewis ran for three touchdowns Saturday night, each set up by a key third-down conversion by Rusty LaRue, as Wake Forest got its first win of the season by beating Navy 30-7.
Lewis went in from the 3 and the 1 in the first half, and added a 9-yard run on a fourth-quarter option. LaRue hit Marlon Estes with a 28-yard strike for the final touchdown for the Deacons (1-3). It, too, came on third down.
Wake Forest moved 99 yards for its first score, with the key play a 38-yard pass from LaRue to Estes on third down from the 1. LaRue's third-down pass to Dan Ballou covered 47 yards to the Navy 3.
Navy (1-2) went ahead 7-6 on a 20-yard pass from Chris McCoy to Cory Schemm. After an exchange of punts, the Deacons drove 72 yards to take the lead. LaRue's 42-yard pass to Estes on third down Wake at the Navy 1 and Lewis went over on the next play.
The Middies turned the ball over six times in the second half. Wake converted the first of four interceptions into a fourth-quarter touchdown. LaRue and Darrell Braswell combined for a 43-yard completion and LaRue scrambled for 15 yards _ both on third-down plays _ to move Wake Forest inside the 10 and set up another Lewis score.
Wake recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and LaRue hit Estes for the final TD three plays later.
