Israeli, US Planes Avoid Crash
May. 15, 1998
JERUSALEM (AP) _ A Hercules aircraft belonging to the U.S. military went off course over the Red Sea on Thursday and nearly collided with an Israeli passenger plane, Israel radio reported.
The Hercules was on its way from Bahrain to Jordan when its pilot erred and began a descent into the nearby airport at Eilat, Israel, instead of Aqaba, Jordan, a few miles away.
The planes came within nearly 2 1/2 miles of one another, but the collision was averted when the Israeli control tower at Eilat airport spotted the Hercules and ordered the Israeli flight to change course.
