ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) _ An 8-year-old boy was stabbed to death Wednesday while playing with other children in front of his grandmother's home in what police described as a random attack.

The grandmother and another woman also were stabbed while trying to help the boy before the suspect, a man in his 20s, fled. He remained at large Wednesday night.

Kevin Shifflett was killed in an ``apparently random attack,'' police Lt. John Crawford said.

Police did not know the suspect's identity, the motive or if the child and his assailant knew each other.

The 51-year-old woman who tried to help was hospitalized in guarded but stable condition at Washington Hospital Center. The grandmother, 82, suffered cuts to her hand and was at Alexandria Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. The identities of both were withheld.
