COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Carey Rich scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures and help South Carolina snap a seven-game losing skid with a 90-68 victory over Western Carolina on Thursday night.
The Gamecocks (4-11) built a 42-32 halftime lead and then reeled off bursts of 7-0 and 11-0 in the second period. South Carolina's biggest lead was 82-55 with 4:28 to go.
Western Carolina slipped to 8-7 despite a 27-point scoring effort by Frankie King.
Rich's backcourt mate, Melvin Watson, added 17 points, Andy Bostick chipped in 13 and William Unseld added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Anquell McCollum contributed 12 points for the Catamounts.
The Gamecocks were able to control the inside, getting numerous put-back baskets, layups and short jumpers.
Tim Ford's three-point play to open the second half pulled the Catamounts within 42-35, but Malik Russell scored three straight baskets as South Carolina began to pull away.
Three straight 3-point baskets by the Gamecocks, two by Rich and one by Bostick, a couple of foul shots by George Formanek and Watson's three-point score established the Gamecocks' 82-55 advantage.
