In this photo by Sakchai Lalit, a Thai man prays for the country's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital, where the 86-year-old monarch has been battling colon infection a month after he had his gallbladder removed. The king's health is on the mind of many Thais, who hold great affection for Bhumibol at a time their country is grappling with bouts of political instability that culminated in a coup in May. Seen as a moral authority and a symbol of national unity, the king has faded from public life in recent years due to his ailing health. He made an appearance last weekend in a wheelchair on the hospital grounds, paying homage to a statue of his father, a doctor, and sitting on the bank of the Chao Phraya river.
