BALTIMORE (AP) _ A police helicopter searching for a stolen vehicle crashed Wednesday after it apparently malfunctioned. One officer was killed and another seriously injured, police said.

Officer Barry Wood, who was piloting the helicopter, died of heart failure a couple hours after the helicopter crashed in a parking lot in an inner city neighborhood.

The other officer was in serious but stable condition with back injuries.

The two on board the helicopter, known as Foxtrot, were rescued by other officers who quickly arrived and pulled them from the wreckage before it caught fire.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, although one witness reported seeing white smoke coming from the helicopter, which he said wobbled as it went down.
