Apartment building suddenly evacuated over unsafe conditions

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Authorities in Connecticut have abruptly condemned an apartment building due to unsafe conditions, leaving about 80 residents only minutes to evacuate for temporary housing.
An inspection into the Norton Towers in New Haven Thursday revealed several structural issues. The city's director of emergency operations says the first floor was threatening to collapse, as well as the ceiling on the top floor.
New Haven Building Inspector Jim Turcio says the plumbing system was the only thing holding up the 100-year-old building.
Inspectors along with police and fire officials worked to evacuate tenants Thursday evening. Most are being housed in nearby motels.
Property Manager Mendy Katz tells WVIT-TV he's working to rehouse tenants in other apartments.
Officials say the building owner is cooperating and understands he is responsible for relocation costs.
