MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) _ A Gulf Air Airbus A320 flying from Cairo crashed in the Persian Gulf near Bahrain on Wednesday, Information Ministry officials there said.

The Bahraini officials had no immediate information on how many passengers were on board of what caused the crash. The Airbus A320 had been configured to seat up to 129 passengers, Gulf Air's Website said.

Saeed Al Bably, an official from the Ministry of Information, told CNN that a rescue effort was under way.
