WASHINGTON (AP) _ The nine current Supreme Court justices plan to attend a funeral service Monday for Lewis F. Powell, the retired justice who died at age 90 this week.

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor are expected to speak at the service in Richmond, Va., a court spokeswoman said. Powell served with them and two other current justices, John Paul Stevens and Antonin Scalia, before he retired in 1987.

Retired Justice Byron R. White, 81, also is expected to attend the service, but fellow retiree Harry A. Blackmun, 89, is not.

The 11:30 a.m. service will be at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and open to the public.

Powell served on the nation's highest court for 15 years and wielded great power because his moderate views placed him at its ideological center. He died of pneumonia Tuesday at his home in Richmond.
