Feb. 12, 1996
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Chasity Melvin tied his season high with 29 points, and Umeki Webb had 10 assists Sunday as No. 14 North Carolina State beat Florida State 78-64.
Florida State took a 20-18 lead on Arleshia Davidson's jumper at the 8:55 mark. Melvin tied the score about a minute later on a rebound basket, then added both ends of a 1-and-1 with 7:20 left in the half to give the Wolfpack (16-6, 8-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) the lead for good.
Melvin, who had 29 points against Maryland on Jan. 3, scored four points to start a 14-0 run that was broken on Carla Williams' basket with 3:02 left in the first half. Williams had seven of the Seminoles last nine points of the half, although they still trailed 36-29 at the break.
Florida State (7-15, 2-11) seemed to have no answer for Melvin, a 54 percent field-goal shooter who was 12-for-17 against the Seminoles. She opened the second half with six straight points. The Seminoles never got the deficit below double digits after that.
Peace Shepard had 21 for the Wolfpack.
Williams had just three field goals, but was 15-of-22 at the free-throw line for 21 points.
