BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man police say used a baseball bat to "severely" shatter another man's arm during a fight outside a liquor store has pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The Enterprise reports that 28-year-old Jean Bazile was granted $2,000 bail Wednesday in connection with the confrontation in Brockton on Tuesday night, and had bail revoked in unrelated case.

Police say Bazile beat the 54-year-old victim with an aluminum bat he had hidden up his sleeve, after the intoxicated victim unsuccessfully tried to punch Bazile.

Bazile had left the area by the time police arrived, but was taken to a hospital after police responded to reports of a suicidal man early Wednesday.

Bazile's court-appointed attorney says his client vehemently denies being near the liquor store Tuesday night.
