Baylor 14, N.C. State 0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Baylor overwhelmed North Carolina State's usually potent offense on Saturday, scoring a 14-0 victory to hand the Wolfpack its first shutout loss at home since 1962.
The Bears (2-1) built a two-touchdown lead on first-half scoring runs from Anthony Hodge and Shawn Washington and then handed the game over to its defense, which was spectacular in the rain, holding the Wolfpack to two first downs through three quarters and 138 yards.
The loss by the Wolfpack (1-3), beaten by 60 points by No. 1 Florida State last weekend, severely hinders its chance for an eighth straight bowl trip. With its only win over I-AA Marshall in the season opener, N.C. State would have to finish 6-1 over its final seven games to even qualify for postseason.
The Wolfpack hadn't been shut out at home since a 7-0 loss to Clemson in the second game of the 1962 season _ a span of 185 games. It was the first whitewashing suffered at home in the 29-year history of Carter-Finley Stadium, which opened in 1966.
N.C. State's longest play of the opening half was a 5-yard run by Tremayne Stephens and the only first down came in the final minute after two offsides penalties against Baylor. The Wolfpack didn't penetrate Baylor territory until the first play of the fourth quarter on an interception and 21-yard return by Bobbie Cotton.
But the Bears held N.C. State and forced them to punt after an 11-yard completion moved the ball to the Baylor 34.
N.C. State's fate was sealed when Stephens fumbled a punt at his 42 with 9:37 remaining, and failed on a fourth-and-1 pass 2 1/2 minutes later at its 35.
The Wolfpack, which had the ball for only 6:51 of the first 30 minutes, was held to 16 yards on 17 plays in the first half by the aggressive, gang-tackling Bears. It was clearly the worst offense half in Mike O'Cain's 2 1/2 years as coach.
Harvey, third in N.C. State history with 4,386 passing yards, was 1-for-8 for minus-1 yard and one interception in the first half. To make matters worse, the senior quarterback pulled up lame with a groin pull 29 seconds before intermission on a scamble. Harvey continued in the second half, but was pretty much ineffective for the rest of the game.
