Mar. 29, 2002
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Kalookan Queen, in the money in 18 of her 19 lifetime starts, will attempt to become the first female to win the Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita.
Kalookan Queen will be ridden Saturday by Alex Solis and carry 116 pounds in the 20th running of the $200,000 race for 4-year-olds and up.
Kalookan Queen is a 6-year-old mare with eight wins and earnings of $630,009. She is coming off a second-place finish in the Las Flores Handicap on Feb. 23 after winning the Santa Monica Handicap four weeks earlier.
``She's sharp, and there isn't a (filly or mare) race for her,'' trainer Bruce Headley said. ``I think she's up to the challenge.''
Kalookan Queen will be coupled in the wagering with Rapidough, who will be ridden by Tyler Baze and is assigned 111 pounds.
Others entered in the 6 1/2-furlong race are: Ceeband, Victor Espinoza, 116; Elaborate, Chris McCarron, 115; Reba's Gold, Eddie Delahoussaye, 114; Pie N Burger, Laffit Pincay Jr., 113; Romanzo, Gary Stevens, 113; and Alyzig, Kent Desormeaux, 113.
