May. 14, 1999
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) _ An explosion at a gasoline refinery injured at least 10 people, five of them critically, and prompted authorities to advise residents to stay indoors.
The fire at Coastal Corp. was contained around noon Thursday after burning for about an hour. Authorities said the fire involved naphtha _ a petroleum product and solvent _ but did not produce toxic smoke.
Explosions shook the walls of buildings in nearby neighborhoods. Emergency management officials did not evacuate the area, but told residents to shut their doors and windows and remain indoors.
Ten people were admitted to Spohn Memorial Hospital, spokeswoman Rita Patrick said. Five were in critical condition and five were in satisfactory condition, but other details were not released.
