BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Officials say a misunderstanding led to a Massachusetts man charged with assault and stalking being mistakenly released from a Vermont courthouse.

The Bennington Banner reports that Richard Ellis was allowed to walk out of a courthouse in Bennington on Monday, despite a judge's order that he be held without bail.

Clerk of Court Laurie Canty says there was confusion because the judge had ordered Ellis held, but also imposed release conditions. She says police were quickly notified and he was taken back into custody.

Police say Ellis fired a gun during a domestic dispute on Friday. He pleaded not guilty to aggravated stalking with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a weapon, among other charges.
