PARIS (AP) — Saint-Etienne scrapped its way to a 2-1 win over 10-man Red Star and a place in the French Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Despite its fans being banned from traveling to the Jean Bouin Stadium for security reasons, Saint-Etienne made a strong start with Ricky Van Wolfswinkel slotting home from a free kick in the 18th minute.

Red Star, a former power in French football — but now playing in the third division, looked set for an evening of misery when defender Julien Ielsch was shown a straight red card for a tackle from behind on Van Wolfswinkel in the 25th.

But Hameur Bouazza leveled with a half-volley three minutes later.

Saint-Etienne was gifted the winner when defender Pierrick Cros diverted a cross into his own net 10 minutes from time.
