WHITEFIELD, Maine (AP) — A car crash has seriously damaged historical gravestones in a Maine cemetery belonging to mostly Irish Catholic immigrants from the 19th century.

The Kennebec Journal reports a car slid on its side through St. Denis Cemetery in Whitefield on March 27, breaking grave markers into several pieces. The 19-year-old driver suffered minor injuries, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Town archivist Marie Sacks says she is "grieved" by the destruction. She says the gravestones chronicled the history of the community by including names, dates and the counties in Ireland where the deceased traveled from.

At least 12 stones were damaged in the crash. It is unclear if the stones will be repaired or replaced.
