Star Wars General's Wife Positively Identified As Crash Victim
Dec. 12, 1985
PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) _ The last two bodies pulled from a wrecked small plane have been positively identified as Barbara Jean Abrahamson, the wife of ''Star Wars'' Lt. Gen. James Abrahamson, and her brother, authorities said.
Mrs. Abrahamson, 45, was a passenger in the plane piloted by her brother Freeman Northcutt, 38, of suburban San Jose, they said.
A third body, Northcutt's wife, Linda, 41, was removed from the wreckage Tuesday.
Abrahamson, an Air Force officer, is the research director for President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly referred to as ''Star Wars.'' The victims were identified late Wednesday and the next-of-kin notified, said El Dorado County sheriff's Sgt. Bill Whealton. The bodies were removed from the crash site, 10,000 feet high in the Sierra Nevada, earlier Wednesday by California Air National Guard helicopter.
Sheriff's officers said Mrs. Northcutt had been riding in the back seat of the single-engine Piper Dakota. But the other two, in the front seat, were too entangled in the wreckage to remove at the same time in below-zero weather.
The plane crashed Sunday against Pyramid Peak in Desolation Wilderness, southwest of Lake Tahoe, about 180 miles east of San Francisco. It was enroute from Tracy to Lake Tahoe.
