WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man accused of fatally shooting a college student in the neck during a drug-related robbery has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Donovan Smith was sentenced Monday in Worcester to 18 to 20 years in state prison. The plea comes more than a year after the state Supreme Judicial Court overturned his 2012 murder conviction in the 2010 slaying of 21-year-old Michelle Diaz.

Prosecutors say Smith shot the Worcester State University student in the neck as they sat in her car. Diaz died days later.

Smith was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.

Smith appealed the ruling, arguing police should have stopped questioning him after he invoked his constitutional right to remain silent.

Monday's plea agreement calls for Smith to be credited for time served since 2010.
