Phillips Charged With Battery
Oct. 09, 1998
PLANTATION, Fla. (AP) _ Running back Lawrence Phillips could be sentenced to a year in jail if convicted on charges he struck a woman at a nightclub when she refused to dance with him.
Michelle Black of West Palm Beach contends that on June 27 the 220-pound player knocked her unconscious. She says she received a chipped tooth and cut lip.
Phillips, released by the Miami Dolphins on July 25, is charged with first-degree misdemeanor battery.
Phillips was a leading Heisman Trophy contender as a junior at Nebraska until his suspension two games into the 1995 season. He pleaded no contest to assaulting a former girlfriend, was reinstated for the Fiesta Bowl and gave up his senior season to join the NFL.
St. Louis chose Phillips as the sixth pick of the 1996 draft, but he was arrested three times and spent 23 days in jail during 19 months with the team.
