RIVERA, Uruguay (AP) _ Ecuador beat Peru 2-1 in the America Cup on Thursday night, clinching a a spot in the second round for Mexico and Colombia and putting the United States in precarious position.
The Americans play Argentina on Friday night at Paysandu and would advance with a win or a tie. The U.S. team also would advance with a one-goal loss in which the Americans score at least one goal.
A 1-0 loss would leave the United States and Ecuador tied on points, with both teams having scored two goals and allowed two. A coin flip would determine which nation gets the final spot in the quarterfinals.
Eight teams from the 12-nation South American championships make the second round. Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay have also advanced.
Energio Diaz put Ecuador (1-2) ahead in the 60th minute and Jose Mora made it 2-0 in the 76th, 10 minutes after Ecuador midfielder Nixon Carcelen was ejected because of rough play.
Ecuador defender Ivan Hurtado accidentally put the ball in his own net with seven minutes remaining. Peru (0-2-1) was eliminated with the loss.
At Montevideo, Mexico tied Uruguay 1-1. Luis Garcia put Mexico (1-1-1) ahead in the 67th minute but Marcelo Saralegui tied the score in the 79th. Uruguay (2-0-1) won Group A while Mexico finished second.
Colombia and World Cup champion Brazil played in Thursday night's final game.
The Americans States (1-1) have beaten Chile and lost to Bolivia. The United States and Mexico were invited to the South American tournament. In the last America Cup in 1993, the United States failed to make the second round.
