ALPHARETTA, Ga. (AP) — Georgia authorities have identified the human remains found behind an Alpharetta home as those of an Atlanta lawyer.

News outlets report that the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says the remains belong to 58-year-old Gary Farris. Farris worked with the Burr and Forman law firm in Atlanta. The sheriff's office says Farris' death has been ruled a homicide.

The sheriff's office was called to the house earlier this month after the remains were found in nearby woods. The remains were then sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for further study.

A statement by the sheriff's office says that "this is not a stranger-on-stranger crime and Mr. Farris knew the suspect(s)." News outlets did not elaborate on the circumstances of Farris' death.

The investigation is ongoing.
