Rebels Raid Turkey Military Post
Oct. 11, 1997
VAN, Turkey (AP) _ Kurdish rebels attacked a military post in eastern Turkey today, killing nine soldiers, the Anatolia news agency said.
Eight rebels also were killed during the raid on the Akcali post, some 12 miles from the Iranian border.
Turkey's borders with Iran and Iraq are lined with steep mountains that are difficult to monitor, allowing rebels to attack border installations easily.
Today's attack comes amid a major Turkish military operation in northern Iraq to wipe out rebel bases there. The operation, now in its third week, involves about 16,000 troops.
The Kurdish separatist war has claimed over 28,000 lives since 1984.
