LONDON (AP) _ The London Symphony Orchestra leaves for Oman Thursday to give three concerts in what it bills as the first visit by a major symphony orchestra to the Persian Gulf states.

The orchestra is to perform on Saturday, Monday and next Wednesday in the new al-Bustan Palace Hotel with John Georgiadis conducting newly commissioned works based on Omani folk music as well as works by Mozart and Beethoven.

The orchestra said in a statement Tuesday that it would be the guests of Sultan Qaboos bin Said during the visit.
