GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) _ A minor league hockey player struck an opponent with his stick above the eye before a playoff game.

Bobby Stewart of the Mobile Mysticks required about a dozen stitches after the hit Sunday by Dennis Waxwell of the Greenville Grrrowl.

Stewart said the hit was intentional. Maxwell said it was an accident.

The East Coast Hockey League suspended Maxwell before the start of Sunday's game. A league spokesman said the league is still investigating to determine if a fine or further suspension is warranted.

Rothwell said teams are supposed to videotape pregame warmups, but this hit was not taped.

The Grrrowl won the game 5-2 and the series 3-2. Greenville's semifinal opponent has not been determined.
