Deputies: Transgender slur painted on home is hate crime
Sep. 07, 2018
NEWBERRY, Fla. (AP) — Deputies say a slur against transgender people has been spray-painted on a Florida home's garage door and is being investigated as a hate crime.
Sheriff's Sgt. Brett Rhodenizer tells The Gainesville Sun that patrolling deputies had discovered the words threatening the homeowners to "move or die." He says the vandalism happened between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Rhodenizer says the message was painted in large, black letters and its words prompted the hate crime investigation. He says investigators are searching the neighborhood, talking with residents and requesting any possible camera footage.
The sergeant says the neighborhood is "full of good people," and he hopes whoever wrote the message can come forward and take responsibility for it.
