HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) _ Rain and heavy traffic contributed to a series of wrecks involving up to 50 cars along a highway during Wednesday morning's rush hour, injuring at least one person, officials said.
Lt. Everett Clendenin of the state Highway Patrol said there were at least 10 and possibly as many as 15 collisions along a five-mile stretch of Interstate 40. The wrecks snarled traffic about 40 miles west of Raleigh.
The first accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. and involved a bus. One passenger was injured and had to be transported by helicopter to a hospital, Clendenin said. The passenger's condition was unknown.
