TOKYO (AP) _ A 68-year-old man who allegedly roamed residential streets across Japan by bicycle looking for easy break-ins has been charged with about 5,000 burglaries, police said Tuesday.

Shigeo Taki has confessed that since 1989, he has stolen cash from thousands of homes between the northern island of Hokkaido and the southern tip of the main island of Honshu, according to police in Saitama, just north of Tokyo.

By day, Taki would ride a stolen bicycle to look for houses to break into at night, police said.

Taki was arrested in May while washing his bike in Saitama. Police said they were still investigating how much Taki stole. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
