Standoff at Mass. McDonald's Over
Apr. 27, 1998
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ A group of hostages held by a gunman at a McDonald's late Sunday were released safely after a SWAT team stormed the restaurant.
Police said there were as many as 13 hostages taken after a botched robbery attempt about 10 p.m. Authorities stormed the building about two hours later.
Police Chief Arthur Kelly said no hostages were hurt. Police would not say whether the suspect was arrested or injured.
``We saw the SWAT team running across the street and they were yelling,'' said Spencer Strickland, who watched the standoff. ``It looked like some kind of a `Miami Vice' episode.''
A second suspect was believed to have left with another hostage in a car, but no other details were available.
Police said the standoff in this city 60 miles south of Boston began after shots were fired by the suspects.
