12 Killed in Bus Crash in France
Oct. 02, 1997
MARSEILLE, France (AP) _ A bus filled with Moroccan passengers toppled off a bridge at a highway intersection and fell some 50 feet onto a road below, killing at least 12 people, officials said.
Rescue squads were trying to extricate passengers from the mangled wreckage two hours after the morning accident on a highway north of this Mediterranean port city.
It was not immediately known why the bus veered off the road, toppling onto a highway below. It apparently was en route to Italy at the time of the accident.
Helicopters flew over the site of the wreck on the A7 highway between Marseille and Lyon, which was temporarily closed. More than a dozen ambulances and six mobile hospitals were on the scene.
The Operational Center for Fires and Rescues put a provisional death toll at 10-12 dead and some 20 injured, most of them seriously.
It was not immediately known how many passengers the bus carried.
