Woman Admits Killing Husband
Mar. 03, 1998
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ A woman has admitted she killed her husband after allegedly watching an instructional video on using the rifle she purchased at Kmart.
Kathryn Bourgoin, 35, said tearfully in court Monday that she shot Steven Bourgoin with the .22-caliber rifle in their bedroom on Oct. 28, 1997. Several hours later, she shot herself in the chest before calling 911.
The couple's four children were home at the time but don't remember hearing anything until their mother shot herself, prosecutor Larry Schultz said.
At least one of the children told police she watched the video before the shooting, Schultz said.
Bourgoin changed her plea from innocent to guilty of intentional murder. Sentencing was set for May 15.
During a court-ordered evaluation, Bourgoin told a therapist she was angry with her 34-year-old husband because he was seeing another woman.
She said in court that she smoked marijuana and drank on the day of the shooting. ``But I don't remember a whole lot,'' she said.
Schultz said he will seek the maximum 25 1/2-year sentence recommended by state sentencing guidelines.
