HOUSTON (AP) _ The top-30 money winners on the PGA Tour this year will compete for a $4 million purse and a $720,000 first prize at the Tour Championship in October.

It's the first time a PGA Tour purse hit $4 million and it is the largest first-prize ever in a tour event.

``The increase in the purse will make the race to earn a berth in the Tour Championship even more significant,'' tournament director Marlene Livaudais said on Wednesday.

This year's Tour Championship will be played on the Champion's Golf Course in Houston Oct. 27-Nov. 2. Only the top-30 money winners on tour are allowed to compete.

Steve Elkington, who lives in Houston, currently leads the money list with more than $900,000 in earnings.
