KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Tennessee hired former player Nikki Caldwell as an assistant coach on Wednesday.

Caldwell, a guard who played from 1990-94, will replace former assistant Al Brown and work mainly on national recruiting and on-court instruction, coach Pat Summitt said. Brown left last month after seven years at Tennessee to be an assistant at Wisconsin.

Caldwell has been an assistant under Debbie Ryan at Virginia for the last three years. She started in coaching as a graduate assistant in 1998 at Tennessee and was a member of the Lady Vols' 1991 national championship team.
