JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ Three boating accidents off the coast of Indonesia killed at least 17 people, officials said today. Sixteen others were missing.
The worst accident was in East Java, where 11 people died Saturday after an overcrowded life boat slammed into a barge on Saturday off Madura island, 600 miles east of Jakarta, said Rusmana, an official at the National Search and Rescue Agency.
On Sunday, a boat carrying 35 people _ five more than its capacity _ capsized during a storm near Bali, drowning at least six passengers.
Eight people were missing after the accident. The remaining 21 people were rescued, the official said.
The boat sank 30 minutes after leaving Padangbai for the resort of Nusa Penida, said Rusmana, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. The captain has been detained for questioning, he said.
This morning, a boat capsized near the remote island of Obi in North Maluku, 1,440 miles northeast of Jakarta, with eight people on board, Rusmana said. Information about casualties was not immediately available.
