Fleeta Louise Hoke
Apr. 14, 1995
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Fleeta Louise Hoke, a former food editor at the Los Angeles Times, died last Friday. She was 94.
From 1939 until her retirement in 1964, Hoke published a daily column. She was known to readers as Marian Manners, a pseudonym that has been used over the years by other Times food writers.
Hoke successfully helped readers learn to substitute other ingredients when the government rationed sugar, butter, coffee and other items during World War II.
After the war, she helped encourage such ``radical'' food innovations as prepared cake mixes and frozen foods, which were distrusted by many veteran cooks.
She is survived by her daughter, Myral.
