Aug. 17, 1993
PALERMO, Sicily (AP) _ Police arrested an unemployed single mother and a couple who had agreed to pay her $7,400 if she declared her baby their son.
Rosalia Lo Coco, 23, along with Francesco La Barbera, 45, and his wife Caterina Ingrassia, 48, were being held on charges they conspired to falsify birth records, Italian news agencies said Monday.
Police investigators said the couple, desperate for a child, agreed during Lo Coco's pregnancy to declare the baby an illegitimate child of La Barbera, a town gardener in Misilmeri, about nine miles southwest of Palermo.
The baby was born last week. Authorities turned him over to a children's home pending an official ruling on his future.
No date was given for the arrests.
